The Finger Is Not The Moon

There is an old meditation story about a person pointing at the moon, the focus not being the finger, but what it points to. Life is this way.. The more we feel we are right the more we are likely to miss something crucial. Life is always changing, and opposites can be true.

What is the point of opinion? Is our opinion what we think is true, or what we want to be? It seems clear to me that there are some of both. In some ways our opinion is our vision of what is. However, it is also what we want to be. Opinion is what we think is true, but it is also a strategy.

We can train ourselves to believe what we want. The biggest zealots are often converts, and we can feed our opinion and sense of righteousness by what we look for in the world. Some are more dedicated to their opinion than their own family, or even lives.  It is challenging to realize that you can be right and wrong at the same time.

We are here to thrive. This can only happen if we are truly present. As the great Bruce Lee said, “Don’t concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all of that heavenly glory!
