Real Virtuality
We have touched base several times on what the Lotus Sutra calls the “burning house.” Joel Goldsmith said “the arm of the flesh has no power.” That is to say that no human made thing will last. Eventually and instantaneously all things change, and become something new, different. This is true no matter what is described. Every empire falls. If all of humanity came together in unity (wouldn’t it be nice?) we could not stop time or change.
So any time we objectify a miracle, any time we try to make someone a thing, like trying to control love, we are doomed to failure. When we attempt to control someone we love they stop loving us. If we think money we bring happiness all we have to do is look at the misery of lotto winners. ( I know, I would like to give it a try too.) If you objectify a political figure you stop looking at them as a whole, and create a fantasy that does not deal with the reality of bias.
The burning house that I have realized that I am letting go of is me. It is the objectification of my own self. That I am not defined by the opinion of anyone, not even me. Realizing that I do not have to compare myself to any other person. That I am not letting anyone down by being flawed and confused. Or maybe I am letting someone down, but that it is OK to be human.
I can let go of my attachment to not failing, to desperately not wanting to be disliked. It is even OK if I dislike myself. I am Undamaged by this world. Just as you are, we are not the characters we play in our own mind. We can be the essence of allowing life to create itself, not knowing what is going on, but knowing that something deeply good is unfolding. That an open heart is our gift to the unfolding universe. This is real virtuality.
