The Pillars Of Creation
The Greek gods were amazing figures that studying almost seemed to be a study of human character and flaws. Like Shakespeare or the Odyssey and Iliad, these classics show the full spectrum, and we apparently in the “modern” world (I say because I always find it odd reading a source talking of how modern it is years after the fact. No time is modern because as soon as it is not now, it is ancient history).
One of the stores is the battle between the Olympians and the older Titans. In defeat the greatest of the Titans, Atlas was given the great responsibility of holding the earth and heavens on his shoulders. His universe depended on him. He must bear the weight, but he can choose to shuck it off, though it would mean the end of everything. As such he chooses to continue.
This reminds me of all the heroes who carry a world on their shoulders. Good mothers and fathers. Great teachers. First responders. Good police. Those who serve in the military. Teacher’s aids and those who ride the bus home on school buses. The homeless as well. Restaurant workers and baristas. Those that are seen, and those that no one notices.
All those bear the weight of Atlas. Any human who lives without support. All those stories and more to me bear all of our weight. Some live without fanfare and die all alone. They are all Atlas to me. You are too. Especially those who know the meaning of forbearance; open hearted support. Each of us are pillars even if no one notices. The Pillars Of Creation.
