The North Star

Throughout human history the north star as stood out as a major tool in navigation, Even in ancient times we have used it to find our way, and to find our way back home. The star also exists in religious iconography all over the world to signify spiritually significant events. Even in great storms it shows through and when we get our bearings again it is there, consistent and inspirational, It inspires us to know that we are on the right route, that we know what we are doing.

Isn’t that what we  need right now? To get our bearings, to be assured as to what direction to follow. Even in the greatest hurricane the star is there to illuminate, to shine light in the darkness. We have it’s light right now in the midst of the confusion and endless recrimination of this time. The North Star is not external, but shining from our heart to show us our way in the world.

The first trace of its light is in knowing when something doesn't feel right. In the midst of seeing and making mistakes we get traces as to our true values. It is important not to assume you know them but to check on them regularly. Mine are kindness, joy, compassion and positive indifference, In acting in the service of these values I have a litmus test  to tell me when I going wrong.

There is no reaching The North Star, and the essential values are a direction, not a destination. They only point true north, toward our true self. The deepest values show us something that does not change according to popularity. No matter what happens in the world of human ego, The North Star shines from the true heart of humanity, and will shine forever if we do not sell it short.  It has been our guide in the troubles of the past, and will lead us through to the future.
